Magic: The Gathering Arena is a free to play online digital card game that offers the same cards, authenticity and fun that the table top version does. With only one game mode available in the open beta, 1v1 matches are still good fun as finding matches are quick due to plenty of players. Progression is a key feature as players play more to unlock new cards and decks for deck-building, which is a staple of Magic:The Gathering. While it doesn't offer anything extra to stand out from other online card games, Magic is arguably the card game that started the genre, and in that regard it doesn't need to be unique or special other than to give players an authentic game experience to supplement the physical version, which it does.

➔ Main points:

  • Authentic Magic: The Gathering game that uses real cards, rules and features from the tabletop version.
  • Only one game mode available right now in open beta.
  • Large player-base due to the franchise's popularity.
  • Free to play with optional cash shop.

After being in closed alpha for several years, Total War: Arena has finally opened up to the public. A collaboration between The Creative Assembly and Wargaming, Total War: Arena is based on the famed franchise of the same name but with a twist.

Instead of focusing on a single-player campaign, the game focuses entirely on player versus player combat, with massive 10 versus 10 battles taking place with thousands of units on the field at once.

The Total War series has always had issues with PVP game modes, specifically balance, or lack thereof, and although Total War: Arena is an entirely PVP game, these issues have not been fixed. Be prepared for lengthy queue times and bad matchmaking a lot in higher tiers in particular.

The game's cash shop is relatively mild. Players can have plenty of fun in the lower and mid tiers, however, in the higher tiers, players who spend money will have a significant advantage, and players who don't will be at a significant disadvantage. Balance wise, premium units aren't a big deal compared to non-premium units, but they do offer up increased XP and silver gains. The endgame is almost completely inaccessible to non-spending players, and it is nigh-impossible to reach and stay in the highest tiers unless you spend money in this game.

Total War: Arena is a flawed game with a pretty harsh ceiling for F2P players, but offers up a lot of fun for fans of the genre.

➔ Main points:

  • Downloadable F2P MMO real-time tactics strategy game with MOBA elements inspired by the Total War series
  • 10 versus 10 PVP battles with a 15-minute time limit
  • 4 different factions each with several leaders and dozens of units
  • Unbalanced matchmaking at higher tiers
  • Very long endgame grind - hard ceiling for non-paying players

Heavy Metal Machines is a 4v4 vehicle PVP game that's set in a post-apocalyptic world. Players compete in team matches using one of three car classes, and the objective is for one car on either team to pick up and deliver the bomb to destroy the opponent's base, while the other cars get to work on stopping each other. Matches are fast-paced and incredibly fun to play thanks to the game's one of a kind mechanics.

There are two game modes currently which is a little low, but more will be added in time. The game also uses progression mechanics for players to earn currency to gain ranks and purchase better performing cars from the in-game store without spending real money. When it comes to presentation, Heavy Metal Machines scores very high points for graphics, setting and atmosphere. Overall, it's a fantastic free to play MMO that is likely to keep players hooked for a long time to come.

➔ Main points:

  • Unique concept that's very original and fun to play
  • Great visuals and audio for a free to play game
  • Wide selection of vehicles
  • Unobtrusive cash shop without pay to win elements

League of Angels - Heaven's Fury is the latest iteration in the League of Angels MMORPG franchise, a series of browser-based free to play titles. The game offers improvements in plenty of areas like gameplay, graphics and progression systems over its predecessor. Where the game shines is in its content offering, where there are new ways to enjoy PvE like server time-based events that adds more options instead of just grinding monsters and dungeons. Under the hood, the UI and graphics makes the game more enjoyable, and overall Heaven's Fury is one of the best browser-based MMOs released in 2020, and marks a successful return of the franchise for both new and returning players.

➔ Main points:

  • Solid free to play MMORPG on browser or desktop

Set on Morus Island, the game accommodates up to 60 players, allowing them to choose from a diverse roster of heroes, each equipped with unique skills.

Naraka: Bladepoint offers an engaging and accessible entry into the world of battle royale, where players can enjoy the thrill of combat and strategic gameplay in a visually captivating environment.

➔ Main points:

  • Martial Arts Mayhem: Get ready for melee combat like you've never seen! It's like Bruce Lee meets a rock-paper-scissors showdown, with weapons, grappling hooks, and skills that'll make you go "whoa!"

Let's be honest: In Goddess of Victory you come for those sweet, spicy shooting girls in anime style, but you end up staying for an unexpectedly good lore, storytelling and soundtrack.

The gameplay itself is pretty simple: you shoot at things in 2D, so don't expect a full-featured online shooter like Call of Duty. Fights can (and will) get messy and fun, that's for sure, but the game lacks the depth of a hardcore shooter.

This is where the surprise comes in, because you'll immediately recognize the quality of the soundtrack, the colourful artworks and the solid lore and storytelling, which will immediately create an enjoyable and convincing atmosphere

If you like anime and are looking for a causal, simple game that is not too addictive or time consuming, definitely give Nikke a chance

➔ Main points:

  • Dynamic tactical combat: plan your moves and utilize cover effectively.
  • Diverse android squad: command a team of unique combat androids.
  • Gacha system: acquire new Nikkes and weapons through a gacha mechanic.
  • Engaging storyline: explore character-driven narratives and missions.
  • Stunning visuals: experience high-quality graphics and detailed environments.
  • Regular updates: frequent new content and events to keep the game fresh.

Hawked is a free-to-play online shooter released (in Open Beta) in November 2023.
It catapults players into the heart of X-Isle's untamed chaos, blending humor, mayhem, and the thrill of treasure hunting.

The game's strength lies in its dynamic gameplay—loot, upgrade gear, and engage in strategic battles against both AI-controlled Disciples and other player-controlled Renegades. The map, although filled with lizards, provides ample room for exploration, gearing up, and solving brain-teasing puzzles seamlessly integrated into the environment.

While the aesthetics might borrow heavily from popular trends, the game's quirks and charms overshadow any lack of distinct identity. Movement mechanics and gunplay may need refinement, but the overall experience hints at the potential for a gaming gem.

➔ Main points:

  • A 2023 PvPvE Shooter: Featuring modern graphics and a fun, action-packed gameplay
  • Humorous Chaos: HAWKED injects humor into the treasure hunt, offering a refreshing take on the PvPvE genre.
  • A Playground of Surprises: X-Isle's map, though chaotic, provides ample space for exploration and gearing up, creating an engaging environment.
  • Outsmart your Opponents: in HAWKED, it's not just about aim. X-Isle is filled with puzzles and riddles to solve, and your wit can transform into a big advantage.

A browser-based strategy, city-building game, Elvenar allows you to play as either humans, or elves, while taking control of your civilization's economy and army.
The game starts off with a Town Hall, but as with other city building games, the settlement can be expanded, constructing roads and buildings in the process.

Elvenar doesn't require a player to over-commit to the game, and you can 'come and go' as often as you like through the day and manage your city step by step. To make things easy, there is no PvP mode in the game, so players don't get attacked every now and then, and don't have to log on and play to defend the city.

The absence of a PvP mode in Elvenar is made up for by a truly engaging PvE experience where you can fight battles which aren't fully automated like in many other similar, yet boring games.
The combat is turn based where you have to use a lethal strategy to beat your opponent using an army of fighters with varying skills and abilities.

➔ Main points:

  • Pacific strategy browser-game.
  • Co-existence of humans and mythical creatures.
  • Economy is key to building an army.
  • Different types of buildings and unique soldiers introduced.
  • No PvP mode, but innovative PvE with turn-based combat system.

Left To Survive is a free-to-play third-person shooter that incorporates fresh and unique arcade style shooting mechanics with a secondary game mode that involves base management, set in a zombie-filled post-apocalyptic world.

Players will play through a story-driven PvE campaign that contains many different levels where your marksmanship with various weaponry will be put to the test.
Gathering resources and building up your base are the key progression methods, as you need stronger guns and armour to tackle more difficult missions. Other game contents like PvP battles are offered in addition to customization of your character.

While free to play, the cash shop can be obtrusive but overall it's a fun game that offers a nostalgia trip especially due to the arcade feels.

➔ Main points:

  • Free to play arcade style shooter
  • Base management sim included
  • Good graphics and sound design
  • Action-packed and fast-paced
